Invented in 1946 by Austrian Hanz Lorenzen and German Sett Renidle to help the rehabilitation of
war veterans who lost their sight during the war, Goalball stands out as a sport specially designed for
the visually impaired.
Introduced at the Paralympics in Toronto, Canada in 1976 and played at every Paralympics since
then, Goalball provides significant benefits for the visually impaired, including improving physical and
mental health, social interaction, and teamwork.
The game is played with a ball with a buzzer, allowing players to track the ball by hearing where it is.
The game, which is usually played with teams of 3 people, takes place on a large field and in a
soundproofed environment. An area has been designated for each player to touch the ball.
Goalball aims to throw the ball into the opposing team's field and score a goal. Silence during
the game is critical for players to follow the game. Players must wear protective goggles and
protective bandages on their wrists or ankles.
Goalball offers a unique opportunity to visually impaired people by enabling them to live a normal
life. Therefore, it has become a popular sport in tournaments for the visually impaired and hosts
various tournaments held at regional, national, and international levels.
Goalball stands out as not only a sport but also an activity that overcomes obstacles, increases social
interaction and develops team spirit.
